A mere compliment is one thing, but to be compared to the greatest living basketball player who ever graced this very earth is another thing all together. Especially if the person paying the compliment happens to be the very player himself.
While promoting his new Air Jordan XXXIs, Michael Jordan shared some thoughts on Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook – thoughts that are massive enough to cause Westbrook’s head to explode in pure and utter glee:
“30 years ago, that’s me,” Jordan told Complex’s Russ Bengston. “The attitude, trying to prove myself, showing so much passion for the game of basketball. You see it in his play. You can tell he loves the game, he plays with energy and flair.”
Westbrook signed a three-year $85 million-plus maximum contract with OKC, which will keep him in the city Kevin Durant recently jilted for Stephen Curry and the rest of the Golden State Warriors. Despite everything happening around Russ, this praise from Jordan seems like a breath of fresh air for the young guard and a very welcomed distraction.
“That’s crazy,” Westbrook said after learning of Jordan’s compliment. “I really don’t know what to say. To have the best player who ever played the game say that about you as a player and as a person is something that is going to keep me striving.”
It has to be noted that Westbrook is the primary endorser of the superstar’s XXXIs, but we’re sure that has nothing to do with Jordan’s words.
