NBA Rumors: Mike Conley Interested in San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks

Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley is an unrestricted free agent, and apparently it may not be as easy to get him back as the Grizzlies may have hoped. According to Bleacher Report, Conley is interested in both the Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs as possible free agent destinations, and the Grizzlies will need to offer a five-year contract for him to even consider coming back.

A source said the [San Antonio] Spurs and [Dallas] Mavericks are among the other teams that would interest Conley, who intends to explore his options in free agency. The Spurs would have to answer questions about how Conley would fit with Tony Parker, according to the source, who said that Conley has great respect for Dallas coach Rick Carlisle.

The Grizzlies are unlikely to have any hesitation in offering Conley a five-year deal. He is one of the best pure point guards in the league, and he has been a crucial piece of the best era in Grizzlies franchise history. But many people in Memphis believed he would come back without a doubt. Clearly, that won’t be the case.

If the Spurs can convince Conley he can mesh with San Antonio’s long-time point guard Tony Parker, their offer would be hard to beat. They can offer the best coach in the league, an offensive weapon in Lamarcus Aldridge, and an MVP candidate in Kawhi Leonard, as well as the championship pedigree that always comes with San Antonio.

The Mavericks face a more uphill battle in recruitment. Unless they sign another franchise player, Conley would almost certainly be the best player on the team, a role that doesn’t exactly suit him. Plus, head coach Rick Carlisle has a checkered history with point guards.
