NBA Rumors: Minnesota Timberwolves ‘Actively Shopping’ Ricky Rubio on Trade Market

- in Minnesota Timberwolves, Rumors

The Minnesota Timberwolves future is very clear, but their present is a little bit more murky.

They have found superstar talent in center Karl-Anthony Towns, but despite the addition of coach Tom Thibodeau, the Wolves are struggling to win and appear to have virtually no chance of making the playoffs.

In order to remedy this, the Wolves are looking for a shakeup in the form of a trade built around long-time Minnesota point guard Ricky Rubio.

At this time, it is unclear what the Wolves are looking for, or who they are talking to. The Sacramento Kings have expressed interest, but according to the report, there is no deal in the works there.

Rubio is a very talented guard who can run an offense to perfection while also providing perimeter defense. Unfortunately, his complete lack of shooting ability makes him a precarious fit for most teams.

There is also a major supply and demand issue in the point guard market right now. It’s the league’s best position, and there just aren’t a lot of teams in need of a point guard, especially one that can’t shoot.

If the Wolves are interested in scoring some draft picks, the Philadelphia 76ers would likely be their best option. Rubio’s lack of shooting would be problematic for them, but there is no pressure to win there this year. The Sixers remain in desperate need of a guard who can consistently run the offense. If they’re looking for current NBA-level talent though, they won’t find much in Philly.

The Wolves are packaging Rubio with young guard Shabazz Muhammad, a once highly-touted prospect who hasn’t found footing in the NBA. The main objective of their trade is to free up playing time for rookie Kris Dunn.
